What is Lean?

Lean (Toyota 1948, further developed by MIT in 1988) focuses on eliminating waste in processes, with the goal of organizing them in a customer-focused and efficient manner. It is a highly effective management strategy and much more than a collection of standard solutions and techniques. Lean visibly places the customer at the center of business processes and, through strong change management, creates a cultural shift in which everyone, from top to bottom, is involved in continuously improving processes.

Lean Six Sigma
Both Lean and Six Sigma are improvement methods that strive for operational excellence. They are often used together because they complement each other perfectly. In short, Lean focuses on reducing lead times and increasing process efficiency, while Six Sigma focuses on structured measurement and improvement of the stability and quality of (the output of) these processes.

Together, Lean and Six Sigma gradually improve processes within multidisciplinary teams, which also stimulates cross-departmental collaboration.

What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma (Motorola 1980, further developed in 1995 by General Electric) is a project-based improvement method that statistically and fact-basedly identifies deviations (errors) and variation in processes and tackles the root causes of these in a structured manner.

Six Sigma improves the reliability and predictability of processes and drastically reduces standard deviations (or sigma/s). It uses clear quality phases and organizational roles and utilizes extensive data. To make this data available, usable, reliable, manageable, and controllable, the collaborative efforts of BPM(N), Business Intelligence, and Data Management are essential.
